Best Point and Shoot Digital Camera Review : SONY DSC-RX100M

SONY DSC-RX100M Digital Camera Review

They say that the third time is always a charm. But Sony has pulled us to the Cyber-shot RX100 series since the first model. Now in its third iteration, the rare camera that will be treated like a rock star - if one is to judge by the comments in the online forum. And why is not it being treated like a diva Beyonce like? Digicam is based on the highly rated RX100 II and has several new features that serious and technology crammed into a compact body. Can RX100 III enforce an award given to its predecessor?

Performance and use

The RX100 III uses the same 1-inch, 20.1-megapixel Exmor R sensor as RX100 II and RX10 (5472 x 3456 pixels, JPEG / RAW maximum resolution). This sensor measuring 13.3 x 8.8mm, smaller than the Micro Four Thirds or the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II, but still much larger than enthusiastic digital camera like the Panasonic Lumix LX7, Fujifilm XQ1, or Canon PowerShot S120. The new model also has the X enhanced Bionz processor, currently used in much more expensive Sony A7 series. What Bionz X do is to extend the ISO range, improve the video / still quality, and generally improve performance.
Sony understood menu system and linear, so the camera settings to your liking takes time. Most often you will hit the FN (Function) button to access the photo parameters such as exposure compensation, ISO, metering, ND filter levels, white balance, and so on. Aperture and shutter speed are handled by the scroll wheel or through the lens, depending on the selected mode and your preferences. The graphics on the screen is very easy to read.

Button selection mode has the usual collection of Sony, including Intelligent Auto, Superior Auto, PASM, Memory Recall (for the selected preset), Movie, Sweep Panorama, and Scene (13 choices). If you want special effects, there are 13 options available in the menu system.

We really liked the quality of the image of the Mark II and RX10, so we do not expect surprises here. Exceptional color, with a depth that is much appreciated in the 27-inch monitor. The model we used cat to sit still long enough, so we had some nice portraits using aperture priority to get a blurred background. This is the beauty of f / 1.8 to 2.8 lens: 70mm 85mm RX100 III is not a mirror classic portrait lens but it was pretty close, so it captures the human face would be a pleasure. Cats looked pretty good too, especially magnify his face for a more dramatic plants. This is just one of the reasons that you want as a large image sensor as your budget allows.

We also take RX100 III to some Western locales colorful and just have fun shoot between good wide angle and telephoto admittedly limited. It annoys us a bit when we fortunately are in a position to take on waves of sand blowing because it comes from the desert - it is good to increase a little more.
Bottom line: Yes, you give some range but you get a wider lens in both points of view and aperture. This is the trade-offs we believe many photographers will be happy to make - especially when you consider the overall image quality and breakthrough EVF. We almost giddy to have such a high quality viewfinder as an option.
Other noticeable improvement is the video format that XAVC S. As noted motion at 50 Mbps instead of 24 or 28, the quality is much more fluid and natural. Without a doubt, this is some of the best clips ever taken with digital cameras, especially compact model. We took a couple of clips from the dust storm moves through Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as a serious lightning display, and RX100 III addressed both excellent. This camera has a built-in optical stabilization which helps minimize blur for movies and stills.

On top of all this, the RX100 III is quite responsive. It focuses quickly and has a burst mode 10-frames-per-second. Because it does not have the processing power of a DSLR, only won about 12 frames before slowing down. Also, the top shutter speed is 1 / 2,000 compared to 1 / 4,000 or more for a DSLR. In other words, given the limited range of tele and other technical issues, this is not one of the sidelines of your favorite sport. Then again, if it is your driving factor, super-zoom is pick; for everyday shooting, however, RX100 III certainly did the trick, and then some.
The RX100 III has a wide selection that includes the ISO lows of 80 and 100, along with 25,600 at the top end; The original range was 125 to 12.800. Given the wide aperture, and a combination imager / processor, the RX100 III is an excellent performer in low light. In our tests, ISO held solid to ISO 2000, then gently loss of quality up to 5,000 (from there, things went south with a visible color shift and smearing). You may get away with 8,000 for something very small but it would be a stretch; Our advice would be to avoid it and stay under 4,000. However, if you shoot at f / 1.8 and ISO 2000 you should get some good pictures even if you are really in a very low light without flash.

Once you have all your photos, using your smartphone and III RX100 simple. You go into a wireless camera menu, select Send To Smartphone, enter the password shown in the camera, select the image you want to share, and off they go. Pairing is an attempt, as it should be.

Features and Design

At first glance, the 20.1-megapixel RX100 III ($ 800) looks similar to the original RX100 and DT Editor's Choice, which RX100 II, but there are some major differences such as a new lens, processor, and a pop-up electronic viewfinder (EVF), with which Last is the coolest of all the new features. You would be hard pressed finding another compact camera is small with EVF use. It is one of the remarkable breakthroughs rarely seen at sea digital camera that passes through our office.
RX100 all-black action III 4 x 2.4 x 1.7 inches, and weighs slightly more than 10 ounces when loaded fully. Turned off, it is easy to slip into a pocket. Excited in a position to shoot, it's about 3 inches but overall it was very small but still has a great feel.
Another major enhancement is the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens new. Instead of a zoom 28-100mm in the previous edition, RX100 III is 24-70mm (2.9x). Although you give up a lot in the telephoto end, the lighter overall with various aperture f / 1.8 to 2.8 compared to f / 1.8 to 4.9. Because collecting nearly twice as much light on 70mm, you will have a better chance for a good picture in a dim setting. This short zoom may be a problem for some shutterbugs, so the test drive is essential. There is a control ring around the lens and functions change when you switch modes. Also in front of the camera is the AF Assist lamp to help with focus.

The leftmost part of the upper deck is EVF pop-up. This is a 0.39-inch SVGA OLED display that rated 1,440K point; Sony calls Tru-Finder. You click a button on the left side of the camera body and, like magic, it appears. You have to pull it out toward you, about half an inch, to use it; No switch diopter to make adjustments to your vision. It is a cool way, an honest-to-goodness breakthrough and excellent quality.
In order to accommodate the EVF, something had to give: hot shoe. There is a built-in flash, but you can not add an external one. Next to the EVF is a pop-up flash, an on / off button, zoom toggle, and the main mode dial.
The main feature on the back is hinged 3-inch LCD that can be adjusted 180 degrees for selfie mode. The screen is excellent, assessed at 1,229K point and we do not have a problem shooting in bright sunlight once Sunny Weather arrangements involved. On the right side of the screen is the thumb rest is a small, red video button-dot, and the key to Function, Menu, Playback, and Custom. There is also a jog wheel with a central OK button. Four points provide access to Flash, Exposure Compensation, Burst / Self-Timer, and Display.
On the right are two small compartments for USB and HDMI connection, and the left is the key to improve the EVF and NFC (Near Field Communication) tags to quickly pair with Android devices. At the bottom is the battery and card slot; he accepts SD and Memory Stick media. You definitely want to buy very high-speed, high-capacity card, especially if you want to capture video with the new XAVC S codec that records movies at 50 Mbps compared to 28 Mbps AVCHD clips typical. We found out the hard way when we loaded 8GB SDHC (UHS-I) cards and found it could not record the new format. Sony 64GB SDXC cards do the trick (UHS-I compatible). The new card is more expensive at $ 1-plus per GB compared to standard SDHC media, so be prepared.
Like almost all the new Sony cameras, RX100 III is equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, which you can use with Android and iOS devices through Sony PlayMemories application. We have mentioned this in a previous review Sony, but Sony has one of the better implementation of Wi-Fi. You can use it to easily share and upload pictures with a smartphone or tablet, or use a smart device to remotely control the camera.

What's in the box

When you buy RX100 III, you will get a camera, batteries, and AC adapters. The power pack is rated good 320 shots and was charged in the camera via the supplied USB cable. Sony also supplies a bracelet, a 39-page instruction manual, and two books; one way to use the EVF and one for Wi-Fi / NFC. No CD is supplied, so you have to download from the Sony PlayMemories Home to handle stills and video and image Data Converter to process RAW files. As an all-around package, there is really nothing like it; beating out even the same price Canon G1 X Mark II, another digicam we really liked.
